吉備地方文化研究所では、『憑霊信仰と日本中世社会』（法蔵館、2022年）の著者　徳永誓子氏をお招きして、下記の要領で講演会を開催いたしました。

　講演は、現在に残る民俗行事の中でも、宗教者らによる「験競べ」に起源を有すると見られるものについて再検討を加えたものです。

　験競べは護法とよばれる超自然的存在を何かに乗り移らせることで、宗教者の呪術的な力を誇示したり、競ったりする行事で、密教的修法が社会から広く求められるようになる11世紀頃から現れてきます。

　徳永氏は11世紀以降の文献史料を博捜し、「験競べ」形成期の状況を跡づけようとしています。

　現在「神がかり」などとよばれる行事が、いわゆる修験道に由来するというよりも、むしろ仏教行事、特に密教に起源をもつことが明らかになりました。

by TOKUNAGA Seiko "Healing Prayers for Mononoke (Specters and Ghosts) and Folk Customs" .

 We have invited TOKUNAGA Seiko, author of "Spirit Possession Rituals and Medieval Japanese Society" (Hozokan press, 2022), to give a special lecture as follows.

Title：Healing Prayers for Mononoke (Specters and Ghosts) and Folk Customs

  The lecturer has studied on some remaining folk customs of the present day, which have been considered to originate from "Gen Kurabe".

  "Gen Kurabe" is one of the special events in which Buddhist monks show off or compete for their spell powers by letting something possessed with supernatural beings called "Gohou" and the event started to appear in some documents from around 11th century, when the society had a strong need for esoteric Buddhism exorcism.

  The lecturer wades through documents from the 11th century onwards in order to clarify the formation process of "Gen Kurabe", one of esoteric Buddhism sorcery.

  Hearing this lecture, we can understand that some folk customs called "Kami Gakari (God possession)" originated from Buddhism, especially esoteric one, rather than "Shugendo (Japanese mountain asceticism)" culture.
